Social.coop’s May First membership includes access to the May First Nextcloud server which provides a place for members to share files, calendars and more. In order to modify shared calendars and folders you will need to be a member of the SocialCoop Nextcloud Circle.
Interested members may use their Nextcloud accounts for personal purposes, if they wish, with a maximum usage of 1 gigabyte. Members who need more storage space are encouraged to become individual members of May First.
Once logged in different services can be enabled for social.coop members as needed.

In some cases it may be necessary to verify an email address is associated with a Mastodon user, in which case you should contact a member of the Tech Working Group.

Not all of the social.coop project space here is public. Some of it is publicly readable, like this, but write access in particular is restricted to members, so to participate on git.coop you will need to open an account here. Unfortunately, although we would like to be able to integrate accounts across the various platforms we use, we don’t currently have the means to do that. Apologies, because that makes things more complicated than is ideal.

To get an account to access social.coop’s GitLab projects here, follow these steps.
* Send your email address and Mastodon handle to [mailto:tech.group@social.coop <code>tech.group@social.coop</code>] and ask to be added, and the working groups you want access to. (Note that your request will be copied to all members on the <code>tech.group</code> alias, who share responsibility for processing it, but if you want to avoid this contact a single admin directly)
* We’ll create you an email alias <code>&lt;your handle&gt;@social.coop</code> forwarding to the email you gave, and notify you when it’s ready.
* Use this social.coop email address to register an account on this GitLab instance (click here or on the Sign In/Register button visible above if you’re not already signed in)
* Once you have an account, request access to the appropriate social.coop GitLab groups here, which will notify the admins.

You can then post issues, comment, and will get notifications about any changes or issues you’re involved in or subscribed do. In order to modify shared calendars and folders you will need to be a member of the SocialCoop Nextcloud Circle.

# If you are a current May First Nextcloud user you should also be able to request to be added to the circle using this link.
# If you aren’t a May First Nextcloud user then you will need to request an account which should trigger an email that is sent to the SocialCoop May First administrators who will add you.

MayFirst Administrators
Administrators can log into the May First Control Panel using the email address <code>mayfirst@social.coop</code> and the password stored in pass keystore. Once logged in different services can be enabled for social.coop members as needed.

The following people have access to social.coop’s admin account and should be able to answer questions about using MayFirst services, and setting up accounts:

* Dan Phiffer - @dphiffer
* Ed Summers - @edsu
* Nathan Schneider - @ntnsndr

If you would like to help administer May First resources please get in touch with one of the current administrators.

Adding New Users
In order to add a new SocialCoop May First user an admin will need to:

# Log in at May First Control Panel
# Add the user using information supplied in the request form and assign the default 1GB quota.
# Select Nextcloud in the menu on the left and add the new user with a 1GB quota there as well.
# Visit the SocialCoop Nextcloud Circle and add the new user as a member.

Adding New Administrators
In order to add a new May First administrator you will need to add their email address to the <code>mayfirst@social.coop</code> social.coop email alias. Then you can share the username and password from the pass database via a secure channel.

Social.coop was founded in 2017 in the wake of the BuyTwitter campaign. Since then, we have worked toward the goal of placing ever more or our online social lives under good cooperative governance. The portion of the social.coop bylaws governing the disbursement of funds:

Submitting expenses
Social.coop is run through a system of open contributions. There are no employees, but the cooperative strives for fair and sustainable remuneration for its contributors.

The procedure for paying contributors and expenses is as follows:

A member makes a proposal in the finance group (with the Title labeled EXPENSE), detailing either:

* work to be done, the expected timeline, and the contributor's qualifications, and the cost (in USD)
* a service to be acquired, details about the provider, its benefits over alternatives, and the cost
* a donation to be made to an external open-source developer or collective, the work they do that benefits Social.coop members, and a proposed amount

If that proposal passes, the member may proceed. They may post an invoice to OpenCollective, with a link back to the relevant Loomio thread, for up to one half of the total amount.

When the work is complete (or equivalent), the member must post a follow-up proposal (with the Title labeled INVOICE, in the same thread as the EXPENSE), including details demonstrating the work done or service obtained

The contributor should post the expense to the OpenCollective page with a link back to the relevant Loomio thread.

Once passed, the expense is approved by an OpenCollective admin, and the contributor is paid within two weeks, or as soon as the OpenCollective account has sufficient balance

While general budgeting decisions are expected to be passed in the full group, all members are invited to monitor the finance group, and to join if they wish to participate in maintaining accountability.

September 8, 2018

These guidelines were part of the Reporting Guidelines approved by membership vote on September 1, 2018. This version separates Conflict Resolution from Incident Reporting in order to clarify the difference between the two approaches. It also includes revisions made since the 9/1/2018 vote.
----

Conflict Resolution Guidelines v3.1
Handling Conflicts
Social.Coop is based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.

Our top priority is the safety of each of our members and our community as a whole. We will not tolerate bigotry, including fascist, racist, misogynistic, homophobic, or transphobic content and will act swiftly and decisively to protect our members from abuse. We embrace the principles of restorative justice. We want to give people a chance to correct mistakes and learn from them.

How to Initiate Conflict Resolution
We want to prevent conflicts from leading to Code of Conduct violations. We also seek to avoid having productive discussions get derailed by problem posts or by meta discussions of such posts. In the case of conflicts that do not involve violations of the Code of Conduct you should use your best judgment in choosing from the following options:

# Bring the concern to the other member directly via Direct Message.
# Enlist more support from Social.Coop member(s).
# File a formal report to the Community Working Group Operations Team (CWG Ops Team).

1. Bring the concern to the other member directly
If you feel capable and safe in doing so, discuss your concerns directly with the other person.

Use your best judgment to decide whether to discuss the issue publicly or privately.

For addressing a particular problem post, consider the following template: "I noticed your [post]. Although you may not have intended it, one interpretation is ______, and I feel that is not reflective of [list specific relevant portion(s) of CoC]. Would you please (edit your post | take down your post | put a CW on your post)?"

When engaging in dialogue to resolve concerns, consider the following:

* Foster inclusive dialogue by sharing ideas, asking clarifying questions, and responding to others' ideas.
* Identify personal wants and needs.
* Make offers or requests.
* Propose plans to help resolve in a mutually satisfactory way.

For toots in Mastodon, you can request a "delete and redraft." For editable content such as at Loomio, wikis, or similar, editing can be requested. Posts in the Social Coop matrix rooms can be redacted. For permanent contexts such as a live call, a request for a public retraction / correction / clarification would be appropriate (and that also may make sense for edited or deleted posts in cases where lots of people saw the original problem version).

2. Enlist More Support
If you aren't comfortable contacting someone yourself but think such outreach from someone else would be appropriate, ask for help.

* Private support -- Talk privately to member(s) of the CWG Ops Team or a mutually trusted friend to help you resolve conflicts with other Social.Coop members or other participants in Social.Coop spaces. Make a plan together about what you're going to do.
* Expanded dialogue -- Social.Coop members may seek to informally resolve their conflicts by discussing them with a group of mutually trusted Social.Coop members. This should be done confidentially.

Someone else can contact the other person on your behalf and keep you anonymous.

* If you can, you could still help by providing a clear message to send, such as using the template in the section above.

3. File a Report
Remember, you are always free to file an incident report to the CWG Ops Team to seek help in resolving conflicts. Please see 1 above. We do not look negatively on reports that we determine to describe incidents that do not constitute violations of the Code of Conduct, (unless excessive reporting is used as a form of harassment).

We would rather get "false alarms" than have Code of Conduct violations go unaddressed.

If you think someone is violating the Code of Conduct, please report them to the social.coop moderators.

<screenshot of Mastodon's reporting interface>

Click "report @[user]".

Or DM someone on the Community Moderation Team: You can include screenshots, links, and any other context that will help us understand the situation.

What happens after I make a report?

You will get an automated email acknowledging that we've received it. We will do our best to get back to you within 24 hours (understanding that people live in different time zones, have different schedules, etc.).

Our first priority is making sure everyone is safe. If necessary, we will:
<code>Delete, edit, or hide a problem post

This may be proactive to deal with the item in order to not wait for the person to take care of it

or this may be necessary when the person will not voluntarily address the item

Privately tell the violator(s) to knock it off, delete/redact posts on Mastodon/Loomio/in Matrix chat, or apologize

Publicly tell the violator(s) to knock it off, delete/redact, or apologize

Mute or block the violator(s)</code>
We may delay an official response until we have dealt with the immediate situation.

Once we have an understanding of what's going on, we will make a decision and contact you. We will take your feedback into account, but the action we take is our responsibility. This might involve:
<code>Nothing (if we determine no violation occurred)

A temporary ban

A permanent ban

A request for a public or private apology

A request to participate in mediation</code>
We embrace the principles of restorative justice. We want to give people a chance to correct mistakes and learn from them. If you disagree with our final decision, you can appeal it here: < link to CMT >
Working groups (and their affiliated ops teams) are elected from and accountable to the membership, to execute the roles and responsibilities needed to keep social.coop running. They have greater administration access than would be afforded general membership, but work according to policies provided by their corresponding working group.

The behavior of members of Social.Coop is governed by our Code of Conduct. We promote the same values in the Fediverse and will act to protect Social.Coop members from abuse from people in other instances. Interactions with both off-instance individuals and other Mastodon Instances are governed by this Federation Policy.

Values As a cooperative, Social.Coop is based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. Our members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility, and caring for others. We also follow the rest of the ICA Cooperative Values and Principles.

We welcome anyone willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, regardless of qualities such as gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, age, race, nationality, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, family structure, spirituality, religion (or lack thereof), education, or other personal traits. We particularly celebrate diversity and do not tolerate bigotry or prejudice. Diverse opinions on politics, religion, and other matters from our own members or those on other instances are welcome as long as they align with our core values. Let there be no confusion, Social.Coop is anti-racist, anti-fascist, and anti-transphobic.

Individuals If a Social.Coop member finds content that is harmful, threatening, or otherwise in violation of the Social.Coop [LINK: ]Code of Conduct, they have options:

* if they are comfortable and believe it will help, they can consider contacting the violator privately to respectfully ask that they remove the violation.
* block or mute the user;
* report the incident to Social.Coop via the Mastodon software’ reporting feature.

Action may be taken by the Community Moderation Team concerning off-instance Fediverse accounts upon receiving a report via the Mastodon software.

Upon receiving a report, the procedures described in the Reporting Guidelines will be followed. When reviewing reports, moderators should check to see if there have been previous complaints about an individual, and take their previous actions into account when deciding on a recourse.

The Community Moderation Team will support members who seek informal conflict resolution, as well as those who file a more formal report, as described in the Reporting Guidelines.

Actions that may be taken by Social.Coop moderators include:

* No action
* Adding a content warning to a post when viewed on Social.Coop.
* Removing a toot from Social.Coop.
* Contacting the reported person to ask them to make a behavior change (ex.: delete a toot, add a content warning).
* Silencing (muting) the individual, so the followers may still interact with them, but their toots no longer show up in social.coop timelines.

Causes for silencing may include:

* Un-cw’d content that includes: sexual content; gore, depictions of violence;
* Generalized violent rhetoric
* Excessively frequent promotions of a product or service (i.e. spam)

Suspending (banning) the user.

* Use of violence, threats of violence, or violent language directed against another person.
* Harassment — defined as continuing to interact with or post about a social.coop user after having been asked to stop. This includes, but is not limited to, unwelcome sexual attention, deliberate intimidation, stalking, and dogpiling.
* Making offensive comments or insults, particularly in relation to diverse traits (as referenced in our values above).
* Advocating or encouraging any of the above behavior.
* Posting: Personally Identifiable Information about others (“doxing”); Sexual Material that is either without consent or depicting individuals appearing to be under age 18 — including Loli.
* A bot following social.coop users who have #nobot in their Mastodon profiles.

Instances Action may be taken by the CWG against instances that are a source of problem behavior, subject to appeal by members to the membership as a whole.

Instance Three Strikes Rule: If the Community Moderation Team receives three reports concerning users of an instance that seem to fit a pattern of behavior, the Community Moderation Team will research the instance. If it is an obvious candidate for silencing or suspending under the below criteria, Community Moderation Team may do so. If it is not obvious, Community Moderation Team will contact the instance admin about the behavior and make their decision about ongoing federation based upon their response.

Silencing: Users may still follow users on a silenced instance, but the instance’s users will not be visible on the public timeline. Criteria for silencing include:

* The site is the origin of a significant amount of spam.
* The site is the origin of a significant number of users whose behavior has been reported as violating our Values or the Social.Coop Code of Conduct.
* The site is the origin of repeated posts of sexual content, gore, and generalized violent rhetoric that lack content warnings.

Suspending:

* The site is the origin of a pattern of hate speech, and lacks policies or fails to enforce policies to deal with hate speech, or actively encourages it.
* The site is the origin of repeated instances of harassment, and lacks policies or fails to enforce policies to deal with harasser users, or actively encourages them.
* The site is the origin of sexual content depicting minors under 18, or non-consensual content like revenge porn.
